After the sugar tax, sales of healthy drinks in the UK have risen significantly!
According to IRI, a market research firm, sales of soft drinks in the UK have increased by 5 million pounds a week to 0.167 billion pounds a week since the introduction of the sugar tax on April 6 this year.
With the price of many soft drinks on supermarket shelves rising, consumers have turned their attention to low-sugar drinks and water. Survey data show that weekly consumption of low-sugar soft drinks in the UK has increased by 7%.
The UK announced a sugar tax in 2016 to prepare £ 0.52 billion to invest in sports equipment and children's breakfast clubs for British children. However, the Office for Budget Responsibility has since revised the preparatory funding to £ 0.275 billion.
According to the British sugar tax regulations, if 5 grams of sugar is added to every 100 milliliters of beverage in ready-to-drink beverages or reconstituted beverages, the threshold will be reached, and the tax will be 0.18 pounds. When every 100 milliliters of beverage contains more than 8 grams of sugar, it will face a tax rate of 0.24 pounds per liter.
According to IRI's research data, since the introduction of the sugar tax, sales of Pepsi and Coca-Cola have fallen by 2% and 1% respectively, while "sales of other major brands have been positively affected".
Stephen Jacobs, IRI's director of market analysis, said: "The UK sugar tax has had a clear impact on the soft drink category, but so far it has not affected sales across the industry."
"Good weather always increases soft drink sales, but rising prices have undoubtedly prompted consumers to make healthier choices. In fact, one out of every 13 soft drinks sold in the UK is a low-sugar product."
"We expect major brands to take advantage of the changing lifestyle habits of the British, take advantage of the situation, and successfully profit."
Public Health England said last week that the UK plans to assess whether to include dairy in the UK sugar tax in 2020.
According to the current sugar tax, if the milk-containing beverage contains more than 75% milk or any milk substitute containing 120 mg of calcium per 100 ml, it is not covered by the sugar tax, partly to ensure the nutritional value of the beverage.
