Lead researcher Julia Baudry, a scientist at the Sorbonne University Research Center in Paris, France, explained: "Specifically, we found that eating more organic food was associated with an 86% reduction in the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a 76% reduction in the incidence of all lymphomas, and a 34% reduction in the incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer."
Julia Baudry said: "If our findings are confirmed, then eating organic foods may help prevent cancer. In fact, whether organic or not, adding fruits and vegetables to the diet can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and cancer."
Mark Guinter, a postdoctoral fellow from the American Cancer Society, said: "The most important thing is to avoid red and processed meats, make sure you eat fruits and vegetables, and eat whole grains."
In this latest study, Julia Baudry and her colleagues analyzed data from nearly 69000 people participating in an ongoing study in France on the link between nutrition and health. The participants filled out annual questionnaires about their health (including cancer cases, followed for an average of 4.5 years) and their consumption of organic products, including fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, bread and other foods.
Scientists have found that eating organic food is associated with a reduced risk of cancer, including taking into account other cancer-causing factors. "We did take into account various factors that might be involved in this relationship, such as family history of cancer, or healthier eating habits in terms of nutrition and food consumption, as well as sociodemographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors," said Julia Baudry. Controlling for these factors did not significantly change the findings.
Studies have shown that people who eat organic food have lower levels of pesticide residues in their urine. Organic food is grown without pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals. In past studies, "exposure to pesticides was associated with a higher risk of cancer". Baudry said.
This latest study also backs up the findings of a UK study that found an association between organic food intake and low risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Dr. Frank Hu, of the Harvard Chan School of Public Health, said animal studies have shown that pesticides increase DNA damage, which increases cancer risk. Chemicals can also disrupt the endocrine system. However, there is not enough evidence to support the new dietary recommendations.
In fact, whether traditional or organic, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables can improve the quality of the diet and reduce the risk of chronic diseases including cancer.
