Probiotics Market Trends from the Top Ten Functional Food Trends in the United States in 2018


Dr. A. Elizabeth Sloan of the United States recently pointed out in the "Top Ten Functional Food Trends of 2018" that instant nutrition and daily performance foods. As well as health-promoting processed foods, is the trend in the functional food and beverage sector. Probiotics are the fastest growing supplement and special nutritional ingredient in the ninth item, "In Search of Bioactive Substances. The "Top 10 Functional Food Trends" are based on a variety of informative industry data and are updated every two years. The following is a brief description of the report.
 
1. Instant nutrition InstantNutrition
 
There is a growing need for quick and easy ways to ensure a healthier lifestyle. Highly fortified nutrients, functional snacks and naturally nutrient-dense grains (such as nuts) are also receiving great attention.
 
2/3 (65%) of adults were looking for vitamin/mineral-added foods and beverages in the last year. 63% of adults try to add more dietary fiber, while 60% of consumers seek more protein.
 
2. Fitness Consumer Fit Consumers
 
There is a new group of active fitness consumers who are integrating exercise into their daily lives, and they are driving the $42 billion field of mainstream sports nutrition. In 2017, 45% of American adults described themselves as active (Mintel 2017a).
 
2/3 consumers are looking for foods and beverages that help build strength and muscle (FMI 2016). Only 30% of those aged 18-34 met the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for muscle-strengthening activities (AAOS 2016).
 
3. Nutrition role reversal Role Reversals
 
Whole-fat foods, including butter, that have been on the list of foods most anticipated by the malnourished for decades are back in the diet fad, and high-fat weight loss diets (such as the ketogenic diet and the old stone diet) are contributing to this trend.
 
As of November 5, 2017, whole milk sales jumped 4% to $4.8 billion (Canning 2018). The proportion of people who ate yogurt last year who preferred regular full-fat yogurt increased to 48% (Packaged Facts 2018b).
 
In 2017, fat-free cheese sales decreased by 18%, low-fat cheese by 14%, and reduced-fat cheese by 9%, while today full-fat cheese accounts for 82% of cheese sales (IDDBA 2018).
 
4. Natural Naturalization
 
The clean label and natural food movement became mainstream. 53% of consumers believe that excluding bad ingredients is more important than adding beneficial ingredients (Nielsen 2017a).
 
5. Diet followers Diet Watchers
 
Last year, half of Americans paid attention to their diet: 65% of those over 65 and 30% of those aged 18-34. Last year 1/3 of adults aged 45 and older and 20% of adults aged 35 and younger tried to lose weight (Packaged Facts 2018a).
 
More than 1/3 of American families say they are adopting a specific protein diet. Sales of foods and beverages with labels claiming "excellent protein sources" increased by 12% (Nielsen 2017i).
 
6. Edible plant food Taking Root
 
Consumers continue to experiment with plant-based meals, health products, and meat/milk substitutes. 39% of Americans try to include more plant-based foods in their diet (Nielsen 2017d). 1/3 of adults drink non-dairy milk (Packaged Facts 2017f).
 
7. ConditionallySpeaking due to state of health
 
1/5 grocery shoppers are trying to control a health state that influences their food choices (FMI 2017).
 
3/4 of adults are looking for heart-healthy foods and 64% are looking for cholesterol-lowering products (Hartman 2017). 37% of US adults have coronary vascular disease and 34% have hypertension (AHA 2018).
 
8. Unique processing UniquelyProcessed
 
Shoppers are more focused than ever on making purchasing decisions based on how food is prepared and how well, type and effect it is processed.
 
2/3 consumers generally pay attention to foods that undergo the least processing, and 72% of millennials claim to do so (FMI 2017). Gourmets have included less processing in the top three health food attributes (Packaged Facts 2018a).
 
9. Finding Biologically Active Substance SeekingBioactives
 
1/5 of adults admit to not getting enough essential vitamins/minerals, and more consumers, including 30% of millennials and 24% of adults, even feel they are not getting enough specific nutrients (FMI 2017).
 
Dietary fiber was the specialty supplement most consumed by millennials, followed by probiotics, digestive enzymes, collagen and keratin (CRN 2017).
Probiotics are expected to be the fastest growing supplement/specialty ingredient with sales of $2.4 billion million in 2018. Sales of omega -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids will increase from $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion. And plant-based products with these ingredients are a new hit (NBJ 2018).
 
In 2017, 38% of consumers tried to get more probiotics in their diet.
 
By 2019, bacteria, vitamins/minerals, plants/bioactive substances, and polysaccharides/oligosaccharides/prebiotics will be the fastest growing specialty food/beverage ingredients worldwide (Euromonitor 2017).
 
10. Children's Health Kids'Health
The market for baby and children's products is booming as millennials continue to drive a new baby boom.
