Retail situation of natural health food industry in China

Natural health food refers to packaged foods made with natural ingredients, without any artificial or synthetic food additives, and contains beneficial nutrients that can help consumers maintain or restore a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. Natural health foods do not include staple foods (such as rice, noodles), fresh foods (such as fresh fruits, meat and vegetables), and beverages (such as milk). Natural health foods are mainly divided into three categories, namely cereals, dried fruits and other health foods. Cereals generally refer to unprocessed cereals, or foods made from processed, natural grains. Cereals typically include whole grain replacement meals, miscellaneous grains, breakfast cereals, etc. Dried fruit usually refers to a nutritious dried fruit product that retains its rich taste and nutrients after drying. Dried fruit usually includes natural nuts, dates, wolfberry, etc. Other natural health foods include natural honey products, tortoise jelly and other healthy snacks.
With the increase of purchasing power and health awareness of Chinese consumers, the natural health food market has developed rapidly. According to the 2018-2023 China Food Industry Market Prospects and Investment Opportunities Research Report released by the China Business Industry Research Institute, the retail sales of China's natural health food industry increased from 68 billion yuan in 2013 to 103.1 billion yuan in 2017, with an average annual compound annual growth rate of 11.0. According to the forecast of the China Business Industry Research Institute, it is expected to reach 116.5 billion yuan by 2018. Cereals are the main category of natural health food market in China, followed by dried fruits. In 2017, the retail sales generated by cereal food has increased to 67.7 billion yuan, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.9. It is expected that the retail sales of cereal and dried fruit health food will reach 76.2 billion yuan and 30.2 billion yuan respectively in 2018.
From the point of view of the sales channels of China's natural health food industry, the sales channels of natural health food can be divided into four categories: modern retail channels, traditional trade channels, e-commerce channels and specialized channels. Modern retail channels refer to shopping malls, supermarkets and convenience stores. These channels usually have sufficient space and shelves to clearly display various foods, beverages and other types of products. Traditional trade channels refer to small grocery stores, franchise stores and other outlets whose products are mainly provided by distributors and wholesalers. E-commerce channels refer to online shopping malls such as Tmall and Jingdong. Specialized channels refer to other channels, including airports, railway stations, gas stations, Internet cafes and highway service areas.
According to statistics, the retail sales of modern retail channels in 2017 was 97.3 billion billion yuan, accounting for 51.9 of the total retail revenue of China's natural health food market. Supermarkets and convenience stores are still the main retail channels for natural health food in China, while online channels are the emerging channels for natural health food in China. According to statistics, the market share of online channels increased from 13.5 in 2013 to 17.8 in 2017. Online channels have greatly improved consumers' access to natural and healthy food, and are generally more cost-effective than other channels, and are expected to further increase to 24.0 percent by 2022.
Key drivers of the natural health food industry in China:
1. The population is increasingly ageing.
According to statistics, the proportion of the population over 65 increased from 9.7 per cent in 2013 to 11.3 per cent in 2017, and is expected to reach 13.4 per cent of the total population by 2022. As the elderly population generally prefer natural health foods such as cereals and wolfberry, they are expected to become the main consumer group of natural health foods in China. Therefore, it is expected that the high consumption power of the elderly population will promote the development of China's natural health food market in the future.
2. Increased awareness of health.
With the continuous improvement of health awareness, Chinese consumers pay more and more attention to personal health and prefer to choose natural foods that are beneficial to health. Therefore, China's natural health food is a key "happiness" consumer demand, and may become a leader in any consumption upgrade, many consumers attach great importance to spending on natural health food.
3. Government promotion and support.
The Chinese government has issued a series of policies and regulations to promote the standardization and development of the natural health food industry. As food safety is still the top priority in China, the government has issued a series of sustainable development norms. The government encourages enterprises to improve food quality and produce various products to meet the growing demand of consumers for healthy food. The support of various policies will promote the development of China's natural health food industry.
